Intimate, upscale yet rustic (sort of) atmosphere. Had dinner last weekend on a girls trip with my mom and sisters. The service is attentive, and the bartender (aka Chef of Liquor) stopped by our table to explain how he crafts his bacon whiskey. The food was outstanding - our group ordered the tomato/shrimp appetizer (it was ok. small portion) and lamb meatballs (yum), and everything from chateubriand, osso bucco, to the beet salad. No complaints! Pretty pricey though, so be prepared to spend some money. We shared a key lime bread pudding for dessert and it was absolutely delicious. Great place for a date or romantic dinner. Not for kids. I recommend reservations.

Simply awesome. Great food and outstanding service. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. I had the gumbo, blackened amberjack, and split the sweet potato cheesecake with my wife.

Overall this place is excellent, the food is very thoughtfully cooked and extremely good quality but I feel it isn't quite five stars. The taste wasn't what I expect from $30 dinners. My wife had the cobia which was good but a little dry and my pork was fall off the bone tender but was fairly fatty it tasted much the same as the rice that came with it. The fried brussel sprouts were tasty with the balsamic vinaigrette but nothing too special. I would say we would love to come back but the price is just a bit high for the food. Honestly, I would not even complain about my few nit picky problems with the food if not for the price. I just think I could get similar food for a much lower price at a lot of different places. If I'm going to spend $100 on a meal I want to eat something that makes me WANT to tell everyone about it. Maybe I've been spoiled from other fancy restaurants or maybe I've ruined my taste buds. It's one of the nicest restaurants in the area but it just didn't impress the way that everyone talked about it.

My hubby and I celebrated our 25th anniversary here. The food was delicious, inventive and fresh. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. We tried the beef spring rolls, trumpet mushroom soup and the cobia with crab gastrique. What a lovely place. The very best margaritas in the world!

This place is a gem of an upper-scale restaurant in a beautiful area of Mobile Bay. The food is regularly dynamite. Yes, you do pay for it - there are no "steals" here, but in the 30+ years I have eaten here never has a bad bite been experienced. The seafood is extremely fresh and well-presented. All portions are normal - no little bites in the middle of a plate, but not so much that the sight of the food makes you feel full before the first bite. I recommend everything here, but will for once say it is a great idea to try their steaks. The salads, appetizers and all of their sauces are out of this world great. I probably haven't made it through to dessert in a couple of decades, but everyone raves about them. The atmosphere is lovely and appropriate for special dates and bell-behaved children alike. The restaurant is sectioned in a way to allow for both environments without distraction. The service has never been anything to write home about, and that is the reason for only four stars. On the other hand I have never gone to the Wash House expected quick service - it is more about the experience. Also my food, when presented, was always at an excellent temperature. Perhaps there is a delay issue in the kitchen. Again, it is not an issue with me, but be aware. And if you by chance get served quickly then you have missed more time in this great establishment! It is one of my two go-to places for a superb dining experience in the area.

Celebrated our anniversary last Saturday. The prior reviews were right, the food is very good but pricey. The place was pretty loud that night, not a quiet night of romantic conversation like I hoped. Wife had quail, very small meal for $25. I had chatebriand (sp?). It was good, but no outer pastry, just sliced filet to me.

Great little hole in the wall that's been there for more than 30 yrs. Worth the experience!

Outstanding food. Worth the price. Cobia was fresh, with delicious sauce. Wife had stuffed quail, very tasty. Pleasant atmosphere on a Thursday night. Nice wine list. Service was very good. There must be an excellent chef in the kitchen, unique menu.

Smashing. A charming semi-rustic setting, a variety of smallish dining rooms, great service. The menu is nicely varied, including both straight-up classics as well as more inventive combinations and atypical ingredients. Good wine list as well - they even had the Guigal Cotes du Rhone I like. I've eaten here twice, and both times the food has been very well done. As a recent transplant from Los Angeles, I'd easily rank the food with some of the best L.A. has to offer. Okay, it probably couldn't compete with Cut or Katana or The Polo, but given a choice between The Wash House or, say Mastro's in Beverly Hills, I'd go with this place every time.

Wash House Restaurant is a nice little Mobile Bay rustic restaurant that caters to those looking for high-end cuisine and a finer dining experience than most restaurants around town. Unfortunately, terrible service and mediocre quality-to-price ratio earn this visit a 2/5. Food: The food at Wash House was very good, don't get me wrong. It was also very expensive at ~$25-35 an entree plus cost for drinks and appetizer. When you've climbed up into that price range, I feel like I can get pretty picky. And the reason is that for the same price you can go to incredible restaurants in Nola, Birmingham, and even Mobile (Felix's and the new Tru) for similar if not lower prices. We started with the fried soft-shell crab appetizer. It was quite tasty with a good remoulade sauce, but the crab was over-fried which lost the soft texture that is so wonderful about the delicacy. I'm really being picky here. This dish is good. I had the filet for my entree and I must say that the steak was perfectly cooked, finely cut, and served in a delicious sauce. The garlic new potatoes were good (a little over-done) and the asparagus that came with was delicious and perfectly tender. The rest of table had red snapper and triggerfish. All was grilled, and in my opinion slightly overcooked, but everyone else at the table was very happy with their fish. We finished off with a coffee cheesecake that was delicious and a generous portion. Coffee was nothing to write home about. Atmosphere: Very nice. The look is somewhat rustic and is lit with christmas-like lights above. I like. The tables are not too far away from each other and the noise level is casual. We sat in the bar area (at a raised table) and it was great. The dress was nice but not stuffy. If you're looking for a very formal, candle-lit sort of scene, then this probably isn't for you, but I certainly wouldn't call this place informal. If you are coming to this Mobile Bay-adjacent restaurant with hopes of seeing the bay, then don't get too excited. While I hear there may be better views in one of the other rooms, the main room that holds the majority of the diners has no windows (that I could see) and you forget where you are. This really isn't a big problem as the atmosphere is nice and cozy, but it's a shame that the restaurant doesn't take better advantage of where it is. Service: Terrible. When you spend that much money for an entree, you are also spending more on service. Our appetizers came out on time, but before our wine. Our entrees came out a little over an hour after we'd finished eating our appetizers, and long after we'd finished our drinks. We tried to signal over our waiter for more wine, but he wasn't paying any attention to the floor and was watching the baseball game at the bar instead. When we finally did order more wine, he brought it out about 15 minutes later. The menu at Wash House isn't very big, and so it is to be expected that the waiters have a good working knowledge of the menu, especially a menu that doesn't seem to change from night to night. The waiter didn't know what kinds of sauces were on entrees we asked about, and responded "some French word" when we pressed. When you pay that much for a meal, you should expect impeccable service, and certainly nothing below-average. After an hour had gone by waiting for the entree, someone I was with asked for an appetizer or something on the house to snack on while we waited. This is always plus or minus and not a guarantee. I'm with you, we all have bills. But the waiter said "are you kidding?". Terrible. I've heard that great service does exist here, so we were probably having bad luck. But slow kitchen speed is slow kitchen speed for everyone. Final thoughts: If you've got a lot of spare cash and you like fine dining, then you should probably try out Wash House given the lack of fine dining choices in the Mobile-Fairhope area. That said, don't expect the best meal of your life and be wary of bad service for a high price.

Expected better atmosphere for the menu price. Food was good...but wasn't amazing. Good place to have gone once.

Delicious meal. Went here based Ina recommendation and wasn't disappointed. I ordered the fish special - grilled snapper - and it was perfectly prepared. Not was served over a chilled rice concoction that I personally would have preferred warm, but favors were delicious. Got the key lime bread pudding for desert and it was tasty though very very rich (share it!). Will most definitely will be back next time I'm in town.

I May have to Wash the Dishes! The Wash House is located along the toney Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. The restaurant is very professionally run. It has a welcoming feel. Our serer was quite knowledgeable about the menu and was helpful with recommendations. Drinks are overpriced and nothing was particularly interesting or original on their list of recommended cocktails. A few wines are reasonably priced, but most are quite high. We shared an appetizer of delicious oysters on a lettuce leaf to roll it up in. Very tasty, but then they should be at $4 per oyster. We had a variety of seafood entrees and all were good to really good. A couple of desserts were nice, but nothing special. Prices were very high. While I enjoyed most of the food very much, I would have a hard time rushing back since the value was only mediocre.

Don't let the outside fool you. This is a very nice restaurant. White tablecloths and all. The only way you might be disappointed in the Wash House is if you failed to make a reservation on a weekend. The line can get very long during season. The Wash House is a fine dining establishment with an excellent menu, great wine list, superb service and a fun atmosphere. Families have been having their special dinners here for generations for a reason. I've never had a bad meal here and it is the first place that came to mind for celebrating our anniversary. There is a small but quirky bar with a great, fun bartender and many go solely for that experience. You can eat at the bar, but the dining room is quite lovely and very different. Take your time, this is old fashioned service with a Southern Accent.

I had such high expectation due to many good reviews. However... I was very disappointed. The appetizer, the shrimp stack, which was recommended by the waitress was sub par. A stack of fried green tomatoes with fresh mozzarella surrounded by sautéed shrimp and then covered in spaghetti sauce. Yup, lost me at the sauce, and the tail on shrimp covered in said sauce. The salad was fine. The entree was blackened drum, with lump crab meat over dirty rice. Sounded so good! The fish was completely dried out and the lump crab meat was 1 lump that was shredded over the dry fish. So disappointed. The only reason I didn't give the place 2 stars is the other plates at my table looked pretty good. But being on the gulf, the fish should be great.

It's simple. Have a hand squeezed margarita, order the beef and save room for the key lime bread pudding! Not a bread pudding fan AT ALL... this one is one of the best things I've ever put into my mouth! Outstanding!

First off, the service was great. They were very friendly and knowledgable. The food was also great. We had the Beef Spring Rolls, Wedge Salad, Filets, and finished off with their Key Lime Bread Pudding, which was awesome. Atmosphere was nice, very quiet and classy.

Great food and great service. The best filet you'll ever have. By far the best restaurant in Fairhope.

My husband and I really enjoyed our recent visit to the Wash House. The ambience is rustic but elegant, cozy and romantic. We started with salads with a delicious house-made balsamic dressing. My husband had gumbo and flounder with a praline sauce and I had the butternut squash bisque and filet mignon. The quality of the food was really good and the service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was crowded for a week night in the off-season, but being one of only a few upscale restaurants in the area besides the dining rooms in the nearby Grand Hotel, I would think it is always busy with people who are looking for good food and atmosphere. In fact, we noticed that a large group of people who were staying at the Grand, as were we, were dining there also.

Nice place with a pleasant atmosphere. Their menu offers a good selection of dishes but I really enjoyed the gumbo. You'll spend some money here but it's worth it.

For NYE they had an amazing buffet dinner, with all the good southern eats (even smoked alligator!). The tip tops were playing on the patio, and everyone danced! Not only do they throw a great party, they serve wonderful food on any given night. And you can walk outside under the oak trees to help you digest your food.

I was just greeted by the most condescending and ungracious hostess. Decided not to stay and endure belittling. Menu looked mediocre anyway.

What can I say about the Wash House that has not already been said. This is a great little upscale place near Fairhope, AL. Been there every time I have been in the area and the food has always been top notch. Service is attentive, but not rushed. Some folks say the service is slow, but I think it is what it should be for this type of a quality restaurant. This trip I had the Shrimp and grits with a cup of the gumbo to get started. The gumbo was one of the best I have had ever, great flavor and just the right amount of spice. The shrimp and grits is a southern classic and they do a wonderful version. This is not the typical Charleston style but more of a cajun fusion with the lowland style, I liked it a lot and will be attempting to replicate in my own kitchen at home.

This is a dining experience not to be missed. The outside of the building is a real fooler and well disguises the elegance within. I had the filet and my husband had the chateaubrian. Both were excellent and as good as we've had in much larger cities, like NY or Vegas. The key lime bread pudding was amazing. This is the first time I have written a review and I give this restaurant my highest recommendation.

Been here a few times, the most recent was our anniversary recently. Food is very good, with some unique things on it; however for the money I would like a little bit more to it. Left hungry, although we enjoyed everything we ordered. The wait staff was average, nothing for what I expect when I pay those prices. Compare the attentive wait staff at a Fleming's, Ruths Chris, or a Morton's and the Wash House is poor, although the prices run about the same.

This place was so delightful! I disagree that the price is high for the quality of what I've experienced here. I would put Wash House up against any restaurant in Pensacola. We are already planning an evening back here soon. Well worth a 50 minute drive. If you are into paté or fois gras, the duck liver paté served with orange marmalade was simply exquisite. I was told the chef makes it all fresh . . I do not doubt that at all. My lady and I usually get a large sampling of starters instead of entrees. Perhaps that was the price difference. We got 4 starters a beer and an iced tea for $45. That is an incredible value in my world.

Had a great dinner! Staff incredibly helpful with last minute reservations. Server knowledgeable and friendly. I could not choose between redfish and cobra, she guided me to cobia. First had the gumbo, outstanding! My wife had a great lettuce wedge with real Maytag blue cheese. Then she had fried oyster lettuce wraps, yum! When my cobia steak arrived, I was overwhelmed! Crusty on the outside and juicy inside, she guided me well. Pricey but worth it!
